This replacement guide helps families compare course scope without assuming the course with more topics is automatically the right choice.
| Question | AP Calculus AB | AP Calculus BC |
|---|---|---|
| College-level scope | First-semester differential and integral calculus. | First-semester calculus plus the following single-variable calculus course. |
| Shared foundations | Limits, derivatives, integrals and their applications. | Builds on those foundations with additional methods and topics. |
| Additional BC topics | Not the same full BC coverage. | Parametric, polar and vector-valued functions; infinite sequences and series. |
See College Board’s AB course description and BC course description. Each school sets its enrollment and sequence rules; ask your school whether AB is required before BC.
Ask about readiness and workload
Bring recent algebra, functions and trigonometry work to your teacher. Ask which errors suggest a missing foundation, how quickly the class moves, and how much independent work is typical. Include the rest of the student’s timetable in that conversation.
For example, a student who can follow a demonstrated solution but cannot manipulate a logarithmic expression independently may benefit from focused prerequisite practice before adding a faster pace. This is a learning decision, not a judgment about ability.
