How do coefficients conserve atoms?
A kit makes one model using two red pieces and one blue piece. Doubling the number of kits doubles every required piece. A chemical coefficient works like that multiplier; a subscript describes what is inside each particle.

Connect the picture to the chemistry
For H₂ + O₂ → H₂O, the formulas identify the substances. Changing H₂O to H₂O₂ would replace water with a different substance rather than balance the equation.
Choose coefficients to make the count of each element equal on both sides. Putting 2 before H₂O gives four H and two O on the right, so put 2 before H₂ on the left.
The resulting 2H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂O uses the smallest whole-number ratio. A balanced ionic equation must also have equal total charge on both sides. Balance does not by itself prove that a reaction occurs under given conditions.
A worked example, step by step
Balance the supplied reaction Al(s) + O₂(g) → Al₂O₃(s).
- Keep all three chemical formulas fixed.
- Match oxygen using six O atoms: 3O₂ on the left and 2Al₂O₃ on the right.
- Two Al₂O₃ units contain four Al atoms, so place 4 before Al.
- Check 4Al + 3O₂ → 2Al₂O₃: four Al and six O on each side; all species are neutral.
Coefficients multiply whole formulas. Subscripts must not be edited to repair an atom count.
Why is H₂O → H₂O₂ not a balancing step?
