A poster shows 12 students choosing chess and 10 choosing art. If its bars start at 9, chess looks three times as tall even though 12 is only 1.2 times 10.

- Read the axes and labels first. Identify what each symbol and line represents. Read the units and fixed conditions before comparing quantities.

Connect the picture to the mathematics
A bar’s length represents magnitude, so use a zero baseline and an explicit count or percentage axis. Category order need not have numerical meaning.
For a pie chart, all categories must be parts of the same whole. A 25% share occupies 90° because 0.25×360°=90°. For close comparisons, bar lengths are easier to judge than angles.
Do not add perspective to quantitative charts: a front slice or nearer bar can look larger. Optional 3D in this unit explains grouping rather than distorting frequencies.
A worked example, step by step
Of 40 votes, 20 favor A, 12 favor B and 8 favor C. Specify honest bar heights and pie angles.
- Start the bar axis at zero and label it number of votes.
- Use heights 20, 12 and 8.
- The proportions are 0.50, 0.30 and 0.20, so pie angles are 180°, 108° and 72°.
- A received half of these votes; the display alone does not establish a wider population preference.

Should a 60% category receive a 60° sector?
Compare with an explanation
No: its sector is 0.60×360°=216°.

Examples and datasets are synthetic, independently authored teaching material. Quartile calculations state a median-of-halves convention. Outlier screens identify values to investigate, not data to discard. Random selection and random assignment have different inferential roles. These lessons introduce design and descriptive reasoning; formal inference comes in later units.
The Organic Chemistry Tutor companion title and destination were checked; the full video was not reviewed. Khan Academy’s destination was checked, but its lesson content was not fully readable by the research tool. OpenStax provides optional reference reading. No provider scripts, questions or graphics were copied. Refresh Kid is not affiliated with these providers.
GitHub’s 3D website collection informed optional spatial inspection. Our original sampling model uses self-hosted Three.js with its MIT license. It shows labeled units in four groups; camera rotation does not change the sampling procedure. Quantitative graphs remain 2D to avoid perspective distortion. Complete labeled diagrams, selected IDs and explanations remain available without 3D.
